Wastewater Surveillance of COVID-19 Virus: Help Inform and Communicate Plans for Reopening Businesses

The news media are flooded with reports on reopening economy: desires to reopen economy as soon as possible, anger towards stay-at-home restrictions, and warnings of reopening economy with insufficient testing. Getting data on the extent of COVID-19 community spread is crucial to making and communicating decisions. It is estimated that millions of individual testing per day is needed for safely navigate reopening of economy, but US is currently at less than 200,000 tests per day.

Given that it is impractical to test everyone individually, how could we obtain more information with limited testing? Wastewater surveillance may hold the answer.

Wastewater is a natural composite of viral infection information among the population. By testing wastewater for the COVID-19 virus, one can observe trend (increasing or decreasing) in the extent of COVID-19 infection in the entire community, without having to test every individual. Inspired by success with Polio surveillance in Israel and recent success with COVID-19 in the Netherlands, many countries and communities are using or planning to use wastewater surveillance for pandemic controls.
